One of the most delicious ways to experience Malawi is around the table. At Legacy Lodge, we invite you to try some of the traditional foods that are part of everyday Malawian life.
Start with nsima, the staple of Malawi and a much-loved part of the local table. Made from maize flour and served warm, it is traditionally enjoyed with a relish such as beef, goat or chicken, along with vegetables and other accompaniments. Don't worry if you've never eaten nsima before. We will happily show you how to enjoy it the Malawian way. Local rice is also an absolute must-try.
For something distinctly local, try chambo, one of Malawi's best-known fish. Fresh chambo is traditionally prepared simply so that its natural flavour shines through, making it a wonderful taste of the country's lakeside food culture. Goat curry is another favourite, slow-cooked until tender and richly flavoured with aromatic spices.
Five wonderful ways to experience Southern Malawi
There is so much to discover beyond your room.
From the thrill of seeing wildlife in the bush to drifting quietly along the Shire River, walking beneath the peaks of Mount Mulanje, taking in the views from Zomba Plateau or wandering through the green landscapes of Malawi's tea country, our day tours invite you to experience the places, people and landscapes that make Malawi special.
Come curious. Bring comfortable shoes. Leave with unforgettable memories.
Set out for a day of wildlife, open landscapes and the unmistakable excitement of being on safari.
Majete Wildlife Reserve offers the chance to spend time in one of Malawi's remarkable conservation areas, surrounded by bush, beautiful scenery and the possibility of encountering wildlife in its natural surroundings.
Every safari is different. You never quite know what you might find around the next bend, which is part of the magic.
Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing suitable for spending a day outdoors.
Choose comfortable closed shoes that are suitable for getting in and out of a vehicle and walking when appropriate.
Bring sun protection, including a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Carry water and any personal snacks you may need during the day.
Bring binoculars and a camera if you have them. The animals don't always understand that you would prefer them to come closer for photos!
Dress in neutral or natural colours where practical, particularly if you hope to photograph wildlife.
Liwonde offers a wonderful combination of experiences: the tranquillity of being on the water and the excitement of exploring on foot.
Spend time experiencing the park from the river, then discover a little more of its landscape and wildlife on a walking safari.
It is a day for slowing down, looking carefully and appreciating the smaller details as well as the big moments.
Wear comfortable outdoor clothing and comfortable walking shoes.
Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for protection from the sun.
Carry a water bottle and stay hydrated throughout the day.
Bring binoculars or a camera if you have them.
Pack light, keeping your hands free and your belongings easy to manage.
Wear suitable walking shoes rather than sandals if you are taking part in the walking portion of the experience.
Mount Mulanje is one of Malawi's great natural landmarks, rising dramatically from the surrounding landscape.
A day in the Mulanje mountains is an invitation to leave the ordinary behind, breathe deeply and experience the landscape on foot.
The mountain rewards those who take their time. Expect beautiful scenery, fresh mountain air and the satisfying feeling that comes from earning your views one step at a time.
Wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. This is a hiking day, so footwear matters.
Wear comfortable layered clothing that allows you to move freely.
Bring plenty of drinking water and stay hydrated.
Pack sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses for sun protection.
Bring a light rain layer if weather conditions suggest it may be useful.
Pack light but sensibly. You want what you need for the day without carrying your entire bedroom up the mountain.
Be honest about your fitness level. A mountain day should be enjoyable, and your guide needs to know how best to pace the experience for you.
Leave the bustle behind and head upwards to the beautiful Zomba Plateau.
With its elevated landscapes, fresh air and sweeping views, the plateau offers a wonderful change of pace.
This is a day to explore, take photographs, enjoy the scenery and simply give yourself permission to pause for a while.
Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking and exploring.
Bring a light jacket or warm layer, as temperatures can be cooler at higher elevations.
Pack sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
Carry drinking water to stay hydrated.
Bring your camera or phone because the views deserve a little storage space.
Dress comfortably and bring a light rain layer when appropriate.
